World's Ugliest Dog

So how ugly does a mutt have to be in order to be crowned "The World's Ugliest Dog?" Pretty darn ugly, I'd say.

Meet "Rascal," from Sunnyvale, CA.

This looks like something out of a science-fiction movie, doesn't it? Did you ever see the remake of "The Fly" starring Jeff Goldblum? This little Chinese Crested looks like it may be the result of a similar experiment that turned Goldblum's character into half-man, half-insect. Rascal has the look of a mutant rat.

I think some species were never meant to be. Like penguins. We should pass a law.

Rove Accused of ... Nothing

In an odd piece on the pseudo-mystery surrounding the "leak" who supplied CIA operative Valerie Plame's name to the New York Times and to Time magazine, the New York Post suggests that Karl Rove had spoken to Time's reporter Matthew Cooper but that Rove is not the person who leaked Plame's name.

WASHINGTON — Karl Rove, President Bush's chief political adviser, spoke with Time magazine's Matthew Cooper during a critical week in July 2003 when Cooper was reporting on a public critic of the Bush administration who was also the husband of a CIA operative, Rove's lawyer confirmed yesterday.

Rove is identified in Cooper's notes from that time period, which Time turned over Friday to special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald — under court order.

Rove's lawyer said Rove never identified Plame to Cooper in those conversations. More significantly, Robert Luskin said, Fitzgerald assured him in October and again last week that Rove is not a target of his investigation.

"Karl did nothing wrong. Karl didn't disclose Valerie Plame's identity to Mr. Cooper or anybody else ..." (link)
So what's the story? Let me change the headline so that it makes more sense:

"Karl Rove is not being investigated, was not involved, and is accused of nothing."

Good grief.

Idaho Girl Found; Brother Feared Dead
By The Associated Press

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) -- More than six weeks after she disappeared from a home where family members were bludgeoned to death, an 8-year-old girl was found safe Saturday, sharing a meal with a registered sex offender at a Denny's restaurant in her hometown.

Shasta Groene was reunited with her father, but her 9-year-old brother, Dylan, remained missing and was feared dead, Kootenai County Sheriff's Capt. Ben Wolfinger said.

''Our initial information is that he may be deceased,'' Wolfinger said, adding that officials were continuing the search for him. He said investigators believe Dylan was alive when the children disappeared.

Joseph Edward Duncan III, a registered sex offender from Fargo, N.D., was arrested and charged with kidnapping. He was being held without bond, and Wolfinger said more charges were possible.

Duncan was convicted in 1980 of raping a 14-year-old boy in Washington state when he was 16.

Last July, he was accused of molesting a 6-year-old boy at a school playground in Minnesota. (link)

He'll spend a few years in a state institution and then be released. And he'll be at it again.

When will we wise up to the fact that these people are predators who cannot be rehabilitated? We need to either lock them up forever or execute them and be done with them.

For the love of God.
