They's Riches In Them Thar Hills

This opens up whole new vistas for Southwest Virginia's coal counties:
Coal-to-liquid: Boucher plan could benefit Southwest Virginia
Bluefield Daily Telegraph

— U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Va., is the latest lawmaker to introduce welcomed legislation aimed at promoting the use of coal-to-liquids technology.

Boucher and U.S. Rep. John Shimkus, R-Ill., introduced federal legislation last week to promote the use of coal-to-liquids, a technology that enables the production of transportation fuels from coal — a process that could potentially reap rich benefits to the coal-producing counties of Southwest Virginia, as well as southern West Virginia. It will be interesting to see how Congressman Boucher squares this with his environmentalist pals who consider the region's most profitable method of extracting coal, which involves making golden valleys out of rugged mountainsides, synonymous with the Holocaust.

The prospects are enormous. Let's hope he succeeds.

Alas, Poor Yorick

This story cries out for more information:
Bland County teacher charged with defiling Pocahontas grave
Jim Talbert, Richlands News-Press/Clinch Valley News

Tazewell - A Bland County high school teacher faces criminal charges in Tazewell County that she defiled a century-old grave in the Pocahontas Cemetery.

Commonwealth's Attorney Dennis Lee said Candace Lee Longworth, 31, of Clear Fork Creek Road, Bastian faces a felony charge of disinterring or defiling a dead person from a vault, grave or burial place. Longworth also faces two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Lee said an investigation by Tazewell County Sheriff's Detective Tom Reid indicated that Longworth and two students visited the cemetery and found a grave that was over 100 years old which had either been opened by someone or by nature.

Lee said Longworth - a biology and earth science teacher at Rocky Gap High School - and the two youngsters entered the grave and handled the bones but didn't remove them from the cemetery. He said their actions gained attention when another teacher saw pictures of the students with the bones and reported it. (

If this story is true, one is prompted to ask: Why would a biology teacher take her students on a field trip to a cemetery? There can be but one answer. And the Tazewell County Sheriff may have charged her for it.

Thought For The Day

When Bill Clinton was accused of molesting teenage employees and of having raped a young woman years prior to his having been elected president, who was portayed by the mainstream media as the villain?

The Republican Speaker of the House.

When Congressman Mark Foley was caught sending inappropriate text messages to an under-age government employee, who was portrayed by the mainstream media as the villain?

The Republican Speaker of the House.

Eating Their Own

These guys are the leaders of tomorrow's Republican Party. God help us:
Majority whip slams handling of Foley scandal
By Charles Hurt, The Washington Times

A third Republican in the House leadership team publicly distanced himself from the burgeoning scandal over former Rep. Mark Foley yesterday as a top aide resigned amid charges that he tried to suppress the reporting of sexually explicit Internet messages that Mr. Foley had sent a teenage boy.

"I think I could have given some good advice here, which is you have to be curious, you have to ask all the questions you can think of," Majority Whip Roy Blunt of Missouri said yesterday about his party's muted handling of "over-friendly" e-mails that Mr. Foley wrote to former congressional pages. Now that's the fighting spirit ...

Why They Hate Us

This is why the Arab world, and many on the left in this country, hate America:
Science Educators Happy Over Nobel Sweep
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) -- The American sweep of Nobel Prizes in science this year has filled the nation's science educators with pride over what's done well in labs and classrooms -- and angst over what's not.

A total of five Americans won Nobels in medicine, physics and chemistry this week, the first all-American club of science laureates since 1983.

The U.S. dominance reflects decades of excellent research and training at this country's universities and strong public financing of basic research, said scientists. But they stressed that younger students need more than inspiring role models. (

Blurring The Lines

Look, fellas. There's a template you're supposed to be following. And this ain't it:
Whispers followed Foley for years
Acquaintance says he knew Foley was gay, but behavior with pages was a surprise
By Paige Akin Mudd, Richmond Times-Dispatch Staff Writer

Tracy Thorne-Begland knew for years that his father's longtime political ally, Mark Foley, was a closeted gay man.

Over the past few years, Thorne-Begland's friends in Washington whispered about Foley's penchant for the company of young men, Thorne-Begland said in an interview yesterday. (

You guys need to get it right. Mark Foley isn't gay. He's a pedophile. Dammit.

Off With Their Heads!

New York Democrat Billed Taxpayers for Phone Sex Call

Democrat congressional candidate Mike Arcuri, while serving as district attorney of Oneida County, N.Y., has billed taxpayers for several questionable expenses, including a call to a phone-sex hotline, according to records obtained by HumanEvents.com. (

This cries out for justice. The entire Democratic Party leadership needs to be banished to obscurity forever.

Ridiculous? Yes. Yes. Yes.
