12,000,000.
Just ask the guy who's supposed to be preventing them from entering the country:
Border Patrol chief rejects mission against aliens, drugsT.J. Bonner, president of the National Border Patrol Council, responded to this idiocy with: ""It is shocking that such a high-ranking official would make a statement that is so completely at odds with the law and the Border Patrol's mission. It is equally disturbing that no one at a higher level has taken any steps to reassure employees and the public that the Border Patrol will continue to intercept all illicit traffic that it encounters."

"I've said it before and I'll say it again," Carlos X. Carrillo, Border Patrol chief of Laredo, Texas, told guests at a town-hall meeting Thursday. "The Border Patrol's job is not to stop illegal immigrants. The Border Patrol's job is not to stop narcotics. ... The Border Patrol's mission is not to stop criminals.
"The Border Patrol's mission is to stop terrorists and terrorist weapons from entering the country." (link)
We're doomed ....

This bum is probably entrenched and can't be fired. The only choice is to assign him to a desk in Washington and give him nothing to do and certainly give him no sensitive information. I know, his salary will be wasted but the Dems do that all the time to anybody they perceive as dangerous. Whoops! I just read the article and see that he was recently appointed. Hooray. Fire the bum. (Although this does raise questions about how serious Pres. Bush is about border control. Shucks, we know he ain't.) If he was appointed by promotion, alternative one, above, applies.
I'd fire him in a heartbeat.
The sad thing is that we could win this. First, actually close the border. Second, find and punish employers of illegal invaders. (They're not immigrants.) The illegals will go home when they can't find work. Third, set up screening points at the border to hire "guest workers" to do the grunt work we don't want to pay our native American workers to do.
I think we may be moving in exactly that direction.
