But This Wasn't Supposed To Be
Would you all agree with me that Floyd County is the jewel in Southwest Virginia's tourism crown? The Blue Ridge Parkway, Mabry Mill, wineries, the Floyd Country Store, Floydfest, pickers/grinners, hippies, pot makers, pot smokers ... the list goes on and on.

Well, if Floyd County is bringing in all the tourists, and the mucho dinero that politicians have been telling us travels with them, what in God's name is up with this?

Sheriff: proposed budget cuts could cause lay-offs
Wanda Combs, The Floyd Press

Floyd County Sheriff Shannon Zeman delivered more bad budget news to the board of supervisors Tuesday, saying proposed cuts in his department allocations could force him to lay off three part-time deputies.

The sheriff’s predictions comes on the heels of earlier warnings that rising gas prices combined with budget constraints might force him to reduce patrols or even park his patrol cars.

“We’re facing budget problems,” Zeman said in his monthly report to the board at their regular monthly meeting in the county administration building Tuesday. “We need to find some extra money or I will lose three valuable part-time deputies.” (link)

Looks like Floyd County needs to call Congressman Boucher. Not to drum up more tourist traffic; that has brought the county diddlysquat over the years (see above). No, they need to get him to fork over some more of that Omnibus Bill money that he's famous for doling out in return for being undeservedly reelected year after year.

But to the point, here's hoping Floyd County finds its way. Obviously the Parkway ain't it.
