Intermodal facility may foster new development
By Jeff Sturgeon, Roanoke TimesThe placement of an intermodal hub in Elliston has big potential to improve Southwest Virginia as a business location, state leaders and business people said Tuesday.
It will be at least 2010 before the new facilities for shifting freight containers between trucks and trains are ready, but already officials are confidently predicting a sizable boost in jobs and output for the region.
The project positions the region to "get its footing in the global economy," Pierce Homer, Virginia's secretary of transportation, said in announcing that public funding will be available for the Norfolk Southern Corp. project. (link)
A good idea worth supporting. We need the jobs.

his WILL fostre new jobs. Our new challenge will be recruiting good paying jobs rather than the low paying warehouse jobs that are the easiest to attract. This is great news for the region but bad new for the folks in Elliston who had their local land use controls steamrolled by the state. Elliston will never be the same rural community it was.
however, the region will be in a much more competitive position for job and wealth creation.
