They've Earned This

Democratic Governor Led Away In Handcuffs

The details of this story are so fantastic that I'm reluctant to draw too many conclusions for fear that it's all a big joke.

I've never in my life read of such brazen political corruption as this:

The story:
Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich taken into federal custody
By Natasha Korecki, Federal Courts Reporter, Chicago Sun-Times

Gov. Blagojevich, wearing a black and blue jogging suit, appeared before a federal judge this afternoon on corruption charges.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Nan Nolan set a $4,500 personal-recognizance bond for the governor, who was arrested at his North Side home this morning.

Blagojevich's chief of staff, John Harris, who is also charged with the governor, was given similar bond by Nolan. When the two saw each other, Blagojevich shook Harris' hand and greeted him.

Blagojevich [and] Harris were arrested at their homes this morning in a probe involving the governor's quest to fill Sen. Barack Obama's open Senate seat and focusing on wire fraud and bribery charges.

The governor was led away in handcuffs ..." [link]
A transcript of the 76-page indictment with FBI wiretapped conversations can be found here. It's absolutely stunning.

Well, This Didn't Take Long

Obama Senate seat listed on eBay
By Kara Spak, Staff Reporter, Chicago Sun-Times

Governor Blagojevich was unsuccessful at trying to sell the vacant Illinois Senate seat, federal prosecutors say.

But that hasn't stopped other people from trying to seal the deal.

"Xthehaunting" is offering "Obama's Illinois Senate Seat" on Ebay.

In his ad, he describes the seat in Blagojevich¹s own words, according to the federal complaint released Tuesday: "It's a (expletive) valuable thing, you just don't give it away for nothing."

At 2:30 p.m., bids were up to $99,999,999.99. [link]
The news media and the Obama campaign are working furiously to put distance between the breaking Blagojevich scandal and Mr. Perfect, but it will at minimum provide an interesting backdrop to this - another unfolding Chicago corrpution scandal - that most definitely does involve our soon-to-be president:
Complaint hits Rezko land deal
By Jerry Seper, The Washington Times

A former Illinois bank official, now claiming whistleblower status, says bank officials replaced a loan reappraisal that he prepared for a Chicago property that was purchased by the wife of now-convicted felon Tony Rezko, part of which was later sold to next-door neighbor Barack Obama.

In a complaint filed Thursday in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Kenneth J. Connor said that his reappraisal of Rita Rezko's property was replaced with a higher one and that he was fired when he questioned the document.

According to the complaint, Mr. Connor reviewed the appraisal of the Rezko property by another firm, Adams Appraisal, which had set the value at $625,000. Mr. Connor's complaint said that he told his bosses in a report that the property had been overvalued by at least $125,000 and that a "reasonable and fair evaluation" should have been no greater than $500,000.

Later, the complaint states, Mr. Connor observed that his lower appraisal was not in the Rezko file and that he notified his supervisors that it had been replaced. He said, according to the complaint, the new file had been reviewed by the FBI and "if the FBI were to ask me about such matters, I would tell them the truth. I never rescinded my original findings."

Critics of Mr. Obama's dealings with Rezko charge that the senator may have gotten a deal on his property purchase, noting that Mrs. Rezko paid the full asking price for her property on an adjacent lot. Both of which were sold by a single seller. Mr. Obama bought his house for $1.65 million - $300,000 below the asking price. [link]
This could get really ugly.

A Senate seat posted on eBay and a scandal involving Obama being ratcheted up a notch on the same day. Pinch me. I must be dreaming.

Open Your Eyes, Man

There's a different postulate emerging. The planet is cooling, not warming.

Despite all the empirical evidence being thrust in his face each day ...
The holiday tree* doesn’t need to die
By Christian Trejbal, The Roanoke Times

[blah blah blah]

The tree massacre leading up to the shortest, darkest day of the year goes even further.

Drive down any main street and you are bound to spot holiday trees* for sale, every one of them a potential carbon sink cut down in its prime. Later it will biodegrade or be burned, returning whatever carbon it had accumulated to the air.

Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean we should hasten global warming.

I am working from a premise that global warming is real and one of the greatest threats confronting the world. Greenhouse gases accumulate in the atmosphere and cause average temperatures to rise over time. The science is sound. [link]
"The science is sound." That's true, if you believe in those Playstation II computer models that political "scientists" and easily deluded "scientists" have been using to make their point. A point that, as each day goes by, with actual temperature data pouring in, is proving to be more and more untenable.

The planet is not warming.

Got a second reason for opposing Christmas trees, Christian?

* Holiday tree. How original.

An Obama Supporter ...

... comes out in favor of Caroline Kennedy being a United States senator. And for the same reason:
A Vote for Senator Caroline
By Ruth Marcus, The Washington Post

On the question of Caroline Kennedy for Senate, my head says no, on balance. My heart says yes! Yes! Right now, as you might guess from the hedging on the former and the exclamation points on the latter, my heart is winning. [link]
That's really what it all comes down to, isn't it? People like Marcus knew that Obama was woefully unqualified to be president, but in their hearts - he's black! - there was no other option. Obama had to be president.

And Kennedy is going to be their senator. End of discussion.

My Thought Exactly

Barack Obama can't make a statement about those blood-crazed Muslims who slaughtered all those men, women, and children in Mumbai, saying he's "monitoring the situation," and "there's only one president at a time." Nothing more.

At the same time, he doesn't have a problem opening his mouth and encouraging lawlessness here in this country:
Broken Windows
Investor's Business Daily editorial

Barack Obama is encouraging laid-off workers who are occupying a shut-down window and door factory to continue their sit-in. Is it the president's job to endorse criminal activity?

As many as 200 former workers at the Republic Windows & Doors plant in Chicago are refusing to leave the premises until they get the severance and vacation pay they say is owed them. They have been there since Friday, three days after the company told them it was closing the factory. The owners say their line of credit has been canceled, monthly sales have declined from $4 million to $2.9 million, and they cannot keep the business running.

The workers have a point. The company must make every effort to live up to the commitments it made to each employee on the day they began work.

What the employees don't have, though, is a right to effectively seize property they don't own. [link]
I've been watching this situation in Chicago very closely. It's the perfect soap opera for the Democrats in Washington to latch onto - and exploit for their nefarious ends - to make the point that America is in ruins and drastic change is needed. And latching they are.

We now have a situation where our soon-to-be president is reluctant to fan the flames of global terrorism but is more than willing to cheerlead it here at home.

What were you people thinking when you elected this man?

What Are We Doing?

First I read on Drudge the headline "NATIONALIZATION," having to do with the government seizing partial ownership of the auto industry, then I read an article that says we're not far from instituting a one-world government - that "new world order" that George Bush the First frightened us with - and then I read Instapundit, who links to a column that points out that Obama's plan for the United States, as it stands right now, is darn near identical to that of the Communist Party of the United States, had they seized power:
Obama’s Program Mirrors The CPUSA’s
Sweetness & Light

As we have mentioned before, Mr. Obama’s campaign promises exactly matched the hopes and dreams of the Communist Party of the United States of America.

Now he is about to make those dreams come true.

Some timely excerpts about the economy, from the ‘Election 2008′ brochure from the Communist Party Of The United States ... [link]
Read the whole thing. It's a stretch to be sure. But there's more than a grain of truth to this. The CPUSA's plan for America comes pretty darn close to that of our soon-to-be Great Leader.

And the American people are just fine with it.

Even the New York Times leads with the startling NATIONALIZATION plan:
Washington Takes Risks With Its Auto Bailout Plans
By David E. Sanger, New York Times

Washington — When President-elect Barack Obama talked on Sunday about realigning the American automobile industry he was quick to offer a caution, lest he sound more like the incoming leader of France, or perhaps Japan.

“We don’t want government to run companies,” Mr. Obama told Tom Brokaw on “Meet the Press.” “Generally, government historically hasn’t done that very well.”

But what Mr. Obama went on to describe was a long-term bailout that would be conditioned on federal oversight. It could mean that the government would mandate, or at least heavily influence, what kind of cars companies make, what mileage and environmental standards they must meet and what large investments they are permitted to make — to recreate an industry that Mr. Obama said “actually works, that actually functions.”

It all sounds perilously close to a word that no one in Mr. Obama’s camp wants to be caught uttering: nationalization. [link]
For the love of God.

And if all that's not enough to scare the crap out of you, there's this looming bit of socialism:

The Obama Health-Care Express

Too bad we don't have an opposition party in Washington to fight this.

The Natives Are Getting Restless

Someone told them that "change" was coming. They're not seeing it in Obama's appointments. And they ain't happy:
Liberals voice concerns about Obama
By Carol E. Lee & Nia-Malika Henderson, The Politico

Liberals are growing increasingly nervous – and some just flat-out angry – that President-elect Barack Obama seems to be stiffing them on Cabinet jobs and policy choices.

Obama has reversed pledges to immediately repeal tax cuts for the wealthy and take on Big Oil. He’s hedged his call for a quick drawdown in Iraq. And he’s stocking his White House with anything but stalwarts of the left.

Now some are shedding a reluctance to puncture the liberal euphoria at being rid of President George W. Bush to say, in effect, that the new boss looks like the old boss. [link]
Ouch. Obama looks like Bush? (even with the darker skin and bigger ears?)

I gotta tell you, this is fun to watch.

Cat Fight!

Good Lord, they haven't even taken office yet and they're at each other's throats:
Cracks appear in Obama foreign policy team
By Matthew Lee, Associated Press Writer

Washington (AP) - The first sign of cracks in President-elect Barack Obama's foreign policy team of rivals emerged on Monday as his choices for secretary of state and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations visited the State Department.

As Secretary of State-pick Hillary Rodham Clinton and U.N. envoy-choice Susan Rice separately visited the diplomatic agency's headquarters in Washington's Foggy Bottom neighborhood, persons familiar with the transition said that Rice wants to install her own transition team inside the department.

Such a move by an incoming U.N. ambassador is rare, if not unprecedented, because the job is based at the United Nations in New York, where Rice already has a small transition staff, the sources familiar with the incoming administration. [link]
We all know what happens to those who cross Hillary. If I were Ms. Rice, I'd stay away from Ft. Marcy Park.

It wasn't supposed to be like this.

One By One, They Topple

I take back what I said yesterday about not enjoying the demise of America's newspapers. This one I'll drink a toast to:
Times Co. to borrow against building
By Richard Pérez-Peña, International Herald Tribune

The New York Times Company plans to borrow up to $225 million against its mid-Manhattan headquarters building, to ease a potential cash flow squeeze as the company grapples with tighter credit and shrinking profits.

Standard & Poor's recently lowered its credit rating on the Times Company below investment grade, and Moody's Investors Service has said it was considering a similar move. [link]
The New York Times is failing. Shucks.
