"Why would I want him to succeed?"
"I want him to fail."
That's Rush Limbaugh responding to a question posed by Sean Hannity (you can view it here) in a recent sit-down interview.
Hannity: "... The question becomes, Do you want him to succeed?"
Rush's answer should have been an unequivocal "YES. If Obama succeeds, however he goes about it, America succeeds. And that, my friends, is all that matters.
"But it is my learned opinion, based on years of research and bearing witness to countless forays into socialism on the part of misguided political leaders and evil despots - hello, Soviet Union - that he will FAIL, and take the USA, the country I love with all my heart, down with him.
"The only way to pull America - indeed the world economy - out of its nosedive is through the raw exercise of capitalism and the unleashing of the democratic spirit that yearns to be unfettered in all of us."
It's one thing to believe in a doctrine, Rush. But not above all else. We have a new president. You and I share the fear that this rookie will ruin that country that we both love. But he's the pilot of our ship of state. If he puts our boat on the rocks, America suffers for generations to come.
I want the man to succeed. For my grandchildren's sake. For their grandchildren's sake.

* Yes, it pains me. Rush is never wrong. I blame too much sun down there in Palm Beach.

I listened to Rush's show the day he originally made his "I hope he fails" comment.
Rush was actually saying that if Obama turns out to be the socialist most conservatives believe he is, and if he moves to implement his socialist policies to "transform" America, then he hopes that Obama fails.
I see nothing wrong with that; in fact, I agree with Rush.
Anon got it right (sorry) correct, Jerry. Remember Rush criticized Pres. Bush, McCain, et al over the immigration amnesty bill and Campaign Finance saying they should fail. Still, we got McCain-Feingold and the new prescription drug entitlement. None of us want the gummint running health care completely. We can already see the mess it made of medicare, our schools, etc. The Dems are going to stick us with it anyway but we gotta go down fighting. The omens are not favorable.
It'll be the true test. If we're right about socialism, and Obama adopts the premise that more government intrusion into our lives will turn the economy around, he'll fail.
But we fail along with him.
I'm not for him failing.
I am for him not going down that road in the first place - because Rush and we know that it will definitely lead to failure.
Jerry,
If the Captain of a ship plots a route onto the rocks, do you want that Captain to succeed? Rush is wishing for Obama to miss the rocks.
Rush, and I'm sure, yourself, wish for the COUNTRY to succeed. I didn't want Bush to succeed in his progressive domestic policies. His success or failure either harmed or helped the country, but, the answer to that depends on whom you ask.
More government power and socialization of the economy is bad for the country. The "stimulus" packages and bailouts are for one purpose only: accruing power.
In other areas, he seeks the restriction of 2nd Amendment rights. Go to Whitehouse.gov
and you will see how he wants to interfere with the economy and your rights.
Appointment of liberal judges with corrupt our courts for decades.
So, yes, conservatives should want Obama's policies to fail. Gridlock is our friend.
