A Phenomenon in the Making

Even the Beatles, in their heyday, wouldn't have garnered such enthusiasm:
Hundreds waiting for Palin's book signing in Roanoke; video of overnight campers
By Katelyn Polantz, The Roanoke Times

7:10 a.m.: More than 300 people camped overnight Saturday outside Barnes & Noble Booksellers at Valley View Mall to await former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's signing of her new memoir, "Going Rogue," today. (See video of the campers, who said Palin made a surprise visit Saturday night.)

Bundled in sleeping bags, blankets and hunting jackets, the crowd huddled together, listening to Christmas music piped over the mall's outdoor speakers, in a line that wrapped around the mall's corner.

Lynn Pixley, 61, of Roanoke County, was one of the first 50 people. She and her sister had been there since 6:30 p.m.

For the hundreds that braved near-freezing temperatures overnight to share about 10 seconds with Palin, the Barnes & Noble and Valley View Mall staff attempted to aid the book enthusiasts' comfort.

Store employees pushed a cart of coffee before the sun came up at 7 a.m., selling cups for $2.75. Overnight, Valley View security had let Palin campers into the mall in groups to use the restrooms.

One couple brought their dog for company. Dixie, a Jack Russell-rat terrier mix, played on the sidewalk next to her owners, Patty and Dan Kaufman of Lithia. "We want her to meet Sarah" if the store will allow it, Patty said. "I think she'll like her."

Kaufman, 53, had a copy of "Going Rogue" tucked in a bag that hung on her fold-up chair. Dixie will read it with her overnight, she said Saturday at 11 p.m. [link]
You realize, of course, that even Obama doesn't draw this kind of exuberance.

A sixty-one year-old woman (along with three hundred other freezing enthusiasts) camped out overnight in front of Barnes & Noble, for God's sake, just to have ten seconds with a former governorAnd a  fifty-three year-old wants her dog to meet Ms. Palin.  What?!

There is something going on here.  Sarah Palin has struck a cord.  A kinship like I haven't seen before.

Where does it take her?  Who knows.

Strap yourself in.  This is going to be one wild ride.

Rock Star - yes
Future President - No

You guys are the modern equivalent of the old ladies you used to throw panties at Tom Jones concerts.

You really need to get a grip Jerry... comparing Palin and the Beatles... Palin has thus far been a blip on the screen, the Beatles were the screen.

I'm amazed by the following. I'm not swept up in it.

Although I think Sarah will make a great replacement for Obama in 2013.

Jerry said, "Although I think Sarah will make a great replacement for Obama in 2013."

And you are about as grounded as the clouds in the sky...

I share your want to have Palin as the GOP candidate in 2012, it would be a total blowout!

Sarah Palin, unlike Obama-ayers, is not a manufactured product of the MSM, Soros and Chicago hoodlums. She is also not a phony pol who says the right words (and different "right words" to whatever audience she faces) and then does as she pleases against the wishes of the people. She is one of us and confirms what most of us suspect--we could do better than the phonies who govern or I should say, misgovern us.

No, WD... she isn't manufactured... but without her being tapped to be the veep candidate with McCain, she would not be where she is today.

I would definitely consider that to be manufactured!

Like it or not, she has a background in governance, however brief, unlike your manufactured incompetent president, Drew. She also didn't get elected Governor on lies and deceit, unlike.....

WD,

Keep it up... you are just showing what a wingnut you are...

To misquote a current cliche': I presume I must stop speaking truth about the superbower lest I be thought a wingnut by the steadfastly stupid?

dr00bie said...

You have it all wrong, as usual...

Let me set it straight. You are a wingnut because you believe that Sarah "The Quitter" Palin has more experience than Obama.

She couldn't even name any news sources to Katie Couric without bumbling through the interview!

Then even funnier, a YEAR later, she tells Hannity that she reads the local paper, Newsmax (!) and the Wall Street Journal. Those are some really heavy hitters in the realm of foreign policy reporting! But this comes from the same woman who claimed that since she could see Russia from her home she had a strong foreign policy background!

My money is on Sarah Palin having her own show on FoxNews in the next 4 years...

Is Obama then a quitter? I get confused by the shifting standards.

There is no shifting standard about quitting. Most reasonable people understand that elected officials occasionally leave their current office to seek another office or if they are asked to serve as an appointee.

Palin on the other hand just up and quit as governor. George W. Bush was not a quitter when he resigned as Governor of Texas to assume the presidency. If he had resigned to go spend time on his ranch then a quitter label would probably apply.

No shifting standard, no confusion.

I was in the crowd and got my book signed. She is sincere. I trust her, have confidence and faith in her. I will support her. She and her family are the type of people I would like as neighbors.

As for qualifications, according to the US Constitution, she is qualified. That is the only test that matters.

Go Sarah!

And don't forget, Al, that Palin most likely has documentation she was born on American soil and will gladly share it with the world.

Just thought I'd throw that in the mix and perhaps piss off you know who.

Al,

You are right, she does comply with the Constitutional requirements, and I hope she takes her shot!

Dickensonian,

And piss me off? Nope, you are just marginalizing yourself as a crazy wingnut, just as WD has been doing as of late.

So, have you donated to Orly Taitz's mounting legal bill? :)

Droooooo, who said I was attempting to piss you off? And I'm the wingnut around here, eh?

Just for the record, I'm pleased to announce (as Rick Boucher has said soooo many times) that I did piss you off enough for you to marginalize yourself by assuming something as fact when it hasn't been proven as fact and by calling me a nut.

It is always refreshing for a wingnut to use the same argument that was previously used against them. It is a common theme, Dickensonian, you are not alone.
