Boucher's Toast

So, let's see how that running poll is going over at Clintwood Connection. The one that has Representative Rick Boucher pitted against someone who hasn't even committed to trying to unseat him.
Dear Rick: Yeah, I'd say you have every reason to worry, big guy.

* It's worth remembering that this poll is being conducted in the bluest of all the blue counties in the state. Last time he had an opponent - in 2006 - Boucher won 73.3% of the vote in Dickenson. 2010?

The House Cracks Down

Finally the Democratic leadership in the House of Representatives is taking action on Democratic Congressman Charlie Rangel's tax evasion.

Uh ... never mind. That's being ignored.

The Democratic leadership in the House of Representatives is taking action on Democratic Congressman Barney Frank's key role in the financial crisis that still cripples the nation.

Hmmm. No.

Democrat John Murtha's breathtaking corruption?

Nope.

Democrat James Moran's relationship with lobbyists?

Guess not.

Democrat Peter Visclosky?

Ain't gonna happen.

So what is Congress doing to weed out its bad apples?

It intends to admonish Republican Joe Wilson for telling the president what all America knows to be true.

For the love of God.

Obama's Problem, As Summed Up By The NY Times

Obama can get on TV and talk till the cows come home about his "plan," but Americans still don't have the first clue as to what his plan is. Because Obama doesn't know what it is either. Because it doesn't exist.

The New York Times this morning exposes the house of cards that we've come to call ObamaCare in "Illegal Immigrants Could Not Buy Insurance on New ‘Exchange,’ White House Says."

After giving us this bit of hooey ...
A White House spokesman, Reid Cherlin, said that the president’s proposals would bar illegal immigrants from purchasing private insurance through the new government marketplace, known as an exchange, and that verification of immigration status would be required for anyone seeking to purchase coverage.

Mr. Cherlin said the White House was considering various enforcement options, including the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements program, which states now use to prevent illegal immigrants from accessing government aid programs for which they are not eligible.
... we get this:
Although Mr. Obama in his speech referred to his “plan,” the White House has not developed a written legislative health care proposal and does not intend to do so, instead relying on committees in Congress, which have drafted several versions of the bill, some running more than 1,000 pages.
In other words, Obama is a bystander. A spectator. He has no plan. He's relying on Congressional committees (plural) to come up with "his" plan.

So when our president said in his speech that his plan did not provide health coverage to illegal immigrants, he was, in fact, lying. Only because there is no such plan.

Oh, and because the plans that are under consideration by all those House committees, because they have no enforcement mechanisms attached, did indeed allow for illegals to be covered. At least until the outburst.*

Oh, did I mention the various Senate committees that are working up their own plans too?

Confused?

Welcome to the mess that Obama has created for himself.

The man without a plan. If only he hadn't been shoving cocaine up his nose when they were teaching Leadership 101.

* It's worth noting, for those who think Joe Wilson was lying about Congress's intentions as they relate to illegal immigrants, that the committees working out the details of our future health care delivery system have been afforded the opportunity to ban coverage for illegals when the members thereof voted on amendments that did just that. The Democrat majorities on each committee voted them down. The Democrats fully intend to cover illegals, regardless what Obama thinks or says.

Crazy Like a Fox

I listened to one-time conservative (and now liberal media butt boy) Joe Scarborough prattle on the other night about how damaging Representative Joe Wilson's outburst during President Obama's speech to a joint session of Congress was to the Republican Party, how it would only reinforce the stereotype that depicts the party as being made up of wild-eyed fanatics, blah blah blah. NBC's Brian Williams, who was interviewing him, beamed. "Atta boy, Joe. That's what us handlers expect to hear from you. Keep it up. Tell the great unwashed out there what we want them to hear. How about a pat on the head, young fella?"

I turned the station.

And tossed my Hungry Man dinner.

Now that the dust has settled, I'll ask you a question: What came of Crazy Joe's indiscretion?

Answer: Nobody remembers anything Obama said in his speech. Wilson grabbed all the headlines. Wilson became the story.

This was to be the moment when Obama was going to turn his failing fortunes around and get the American people behind his socialist takeover of our health care system.

Alas.

"You lie!" is all that people took away from the occasion.

Call Joe Wilson whatever you want. But make sure you include the word Godsend in your description.

A Flood Of Emotions

I have to tell you, I sat this morning watching this tribute to 9/11 with a degree of sorrow, followed by anger, then shock, then all three intermixed. A cauldron of emotions I haven't felt since that day all those years ago.

So many innocent lives lost.

So many others profoundly impacted. Forever.

The missing. Still missing.

Those firefighters who ran into the carnage as civilians fled. Hundreds of whom - America's bravest - would never be seen alive again.

And the assholes who murdered these beautiful people - beautiful men, women, children - beautiful Americans, Europeans, Africans, Asians - still walk this earth.

We belong in Afghanistan. The mission is not complete. I want them to suffer pain like no human being should have to endure. I want to hear the screams. Again.

So The Stimulus Worked?

This is troubling, no matter how they try to spin it:
Summers: High unemployment for years
By Eamon Javers, Politico

The president’s chief economic adviser warned Friday that the nation’s unemployment rate could stay “unacceptably high” for years to come — a situation that would seriously complicate Barack Obama’s ability to convince Americans that he’s beating back the recession.

“The level of unemployment is unacceptably high,” National Economic Council Director Larry Summers said Friday. “And will, by all forecasts, remain unacceptably high for a number of years.” [link]
The financial sector may be rebounding. And the services sector is making a shaky recovery. But all those manufacturing jobs that were lost in the recession? I think the Obama administration has handed them off to China without a fight.

The USA, 2009.

Headline of the Day

This, by the way, is what Congressman Joe Wilson was shouting about at Obama's Congressional photo op the other night:

Senate to close ObamaCare loophole for illegal immigrants that media claims doesn’t exist

Looks like somebody was lying intentionally mistaken.

Leave It To The Gov't

I can't help but think about my mandatory visit to the doctor's office a few years after ObamaCare has kicked in. I go in for a routine prostate exam and walk out with my stomach removed. Why? Because the only doctor on staff at the time of my visit was an ob/gyn.

Find that preposterous? (well, maybe). But check out this story about government health care and consider ...
Man acquitted of endangerment, but his animals died in custody
300 of 500 turtles seized from Steve Santhuff died
By Andria Simmons, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

When some of Steve Santhuff’s rare and endangered turtle collection was returned to him last week, it should have been a victorious moment.

But Santhuff is far from happy.

While the Georgia Department of Natural Resources has given back 128 of about 500 turtles seized from Santhuff in 2005, along with 14 hatchlings that were birthed in the interim, more than 300 of the turtles the amateur herpetologist lovingly tended to for two decades have died. The state puts the death toll at 309, but Santhuff claims the number is 362.

The other turtles were whisked away only to be returned maimed or deformed.

“They are not beautiful turtles anymore,” Santhuff said. “It’s almost sad to look at them. They are scarred and pitted, and one of them had their leg bit off by an otter.”

When asked about the turtle deaths and ailments, state DNR spokesman Rick Lavender said “because of the pending litigation we can’t respond to questions about the type of quality of care of the turtles.”

State and federal wildlife officers confiscated turtles from Santhuff, 37, of Lawrenceville, as part of a criminal investigation into allegations that he illegally possessed them. A Gwinnett County jury acquitted Santhuff of criminal charges in February 2008. [link]
This may be the same bunch who will someday soon be given the responsibility of taking care of your granny.

May God have mercy.

My God

This is frightening:

Federal deficit hits $1.38T through August

And we haven't even passed Obama's massive health care program yet.

We are out of control.

Quote of the Day

You need to read the whole thing:

"Mr. Obama also called for "civility" in debate even as he calls the arguments of his critics "lies." So in the spirit of civility, we won't accuse the President of lying about Medicare. We'll just say his claims bear little relation to anything true."
