You Must Be Joking

I damn near threw up when I read this piece from Roanoke Times reporter Tonia Moxley:
Poet Nikki Giovanni to bestow copyrights to Tech

Blacksburg -- Poet Nikki Giovanni may be the closest thing to royalty Virginia Tech can claim.

And now the "Princess of Black Poetry" has bestowed her literary jewels on the university.

Tech President Charles Steger announced at a special event Thursday at the Inn at Virginia Tech that Giovanni and English professor Virginia Fowler have pledged a joint donation to the university's $1 billion capital campaign that includes copyrights to Giovanni's literary works.

Fowler and Giovanni have "touched thousands of students," and through this gift "will continue to touch thousands of students ..." [link]
If there's an axiom that always holds true, it's this: It doesn't take much to "touch" college students.  Insipid poetry written by lesbian professors will always "touch" young skulls full of mush. Ditto Roanoke Times reporters.

One of Giovanni's more famous:

in life
one is always
like we juggle our mothers
against our fathers
or one teacher
against another
(only to balance our grade average)
3 grains of salt
to one ounce truth
our sweet black essence
or the funky honkies down the street
and lately I've begun wondering
if you re trying to tell me something
we used to talk all night
and do things alone together
and i've begun
(as a reaction to a feeling)
to balance
the pleasure of loneliness
against the pain
of loving you

That gibberish passes for poetry in academe.

No, I'm not kidding.

E.E. Cummings is rolling over in his grave.

My personal Giovanni favorite, however, is this one:

The True Import Of Present Dialogue, Black vs. Negro (For Peppe, Who Will Ultimately Judge Our Efforts)

Can you kill
Can you kill
Can a nigger kill
Can a nigger kill a honkie
Can a nigger kill the Man
Can you kill nigger
Huh? nigger can you
Do you know how to draw blood
Can you poison
Can you stab-a-Jew
Can you kill huh? nigger
Can you kill
Can you run a protestant down with your
'68 El Dorado
(that's all they're good for anyway)
Can you kill
Can you piss on a blond head
Can you cut it off
Can you kill
A nigger can die
We ain't got to prove we can die
We got to prove we can kill
They sent us to kill
Japan and Africa
We policed europe
Can you kill
Can you kill a white man
Can you kill the nigger
in you
Can you make your nigger mind
Can you kill your nigger mind
And free your black hands to
Can you kill
Can a nigger kill
Can you shoot straight and
Fire for good measure
Can you splatter their brains in the street
Can you kill them
Can you lure them to bed to kill them
We kill in Viet Nam
for them
We kill for UN & NATO & SEATO & US
And everywhere for all alphabet but
Can we learn to kill WHITE for BLACK
Learn to kill niggers
Learn to be Black men

Forget that she's a lesbian. And that she's possessed of "literary jewels." And that she's the princess of Virginia Tech. If anyone else on this planet wrote, "Can you kill a white man, Can you splatter their brains in the street, Can you kill them, Can you lure them to bed to kill them, Can we learn to kill WHITE for BLACK," they'd be sent to prison.

But this talentless - racist - Giovanni is feted as being some kind of larger-than-life campus celebrity.  "Royalty," as this Moxley woman would have it.

Well, not in my world, babe.

Now or ever.

Militia Case Falling Apart?

They were made out to be gun nuts plotting to overthrow the government.  Were they?  Or were they just playing games?  A federal judge now wants the truth:
Judge asks feds to show militia did more than talk
By Ed White, AP

Detroit (AP) - A federal judge challenged prosecutors Wednesday to show that nine members of a Michigan militia accused of plotting war against the government had done more than just talk and should remain locked up.

U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts heard nearly 10 hours of testimony and arguments over two days. She did not make a decision about whether the nine will remain in custody, saying only that a ruling would come soon.

The members of a southern Michigan group called Hutaree have been in custody for a month. An indictment accuses them of weapons violations and a rare crime: conspiring to commit sedition, or rebellion, against the government by first killing police officers.

Prosecutors say the public would be at risk if the nine are released. But defense lawyers claim the government has overreached with a criminal case based mostly on hateful speech.

An undercover agent infiltrated the group and secretly made recordings that have been played in court. While there is talk about killing police, it's not specific. In one conversation, there are many people talking over each other and laughing.

Roberts pressed that point more than once as Assistant U.S. Attorney Ronald Waterstreet argued in favor of keeping the nine in jail. The judge suggested she didn't hear or read in the transcripts any indication that violence was imminent.

"Mere presence where a crime may be planned is not a crime. ... How does this add up to seditious conspiracy?" Roberts said. [link]
TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 115 > § 2384 of the U.S. Code:

Seditious conspiracy:

"If two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to overthrow, put down, or to destroy by force the Government of the United States, or to levy war against them, or to oppose by force the authority thereof, or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, or by force to seize, take, or possess any property of the United States contrary to the authority thereof, they shall each be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both."

Did the morons who made up the membership of this militia club conspire to do any of the above, or were they simply guilty of shooting their mouths off and playing badass? In following this story it's clear that even the judge doesn't see any seditious activity here.

And now, for the prosecution, it's "put up or shut up" time.

Al Gore, Tipper Gore snap up Montecito-area villa
The Italian-style home has an ocean view, fountains, six fireplaces, five bedrooms and nine bathrooms.
By Lauren Beale, Los Angeles Times

Former Vice President Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, have added a Montecito-area property to their real estate holdings, reports the Montecito Journal.

The couple spent $8,875,000 on an ocean-view villa on 1.5 acres with a swimming pool, spa and fountains, a real estate source familiar with the deal confirms. The Italian-style house has six fireplaces, five bedrooms and nine bathrooms. [link]
In response, I quote a famous conservationist:

"Whether our purpose is to preserve the simple pleasure of fishing in a mountain stream on an autumn morning or the simple security of knowing that our children's drinking water is safe - to save an endangered species, an endangered wilderness, or an endangered earth - we have it in our power to restore the earth's balance before the growing imbalance inflicts its greatest potential damage on our children and grandchildren. Today the human species is the only one with the self-knowledge and the capacity to protect its own future."

Quoted from Al Gore's Earth In The Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit, 1993.

So you know, Al chose young people to preach to because they are the most vulnerable and most easily led.

He's now, by the way, a billionaire with a massive following of ... young people.

You go, Al.  Elmer Gantry stands in awe.

The ACLU becomes a lapdog for the establishment:

"[W]e've come to this: The premier First Amendment organization in America now favors limitations on the First Amendment in the area in which all agree it must have its most powerful application—political speech during election campaigns."

Taking Matters Into Our Own Hands

Peggy Noonan:

The American president has the power to control America's borders if he wants to, but George W. Bush and Barack Obama did not and do not want to, and for the same reason, and we all know what it is. The fastest-growing demographic in America is the Hispanic vote, and if either party cracks down on illegal immigration, it risks losing that vote for generations.

But while the Democrats worry about the prospects of the Democrats and the Republicans about the well-being of the Republicans, who worries about America?

No one. Which the American people have noticed, and which adds to the dangerous alienation  - actually it's at the heart of the alienation - of the age.
George Bush will tell you that he did do something.  He sent the National Guard to the border.

What he won't tell you is that he sent the Guard down there with orders that the soldiers keep their weapons unloaded and to do nothing to stop the flow of illegals crossing the border.  They were there for show.

This to secure a few votes?

And now Obama's even worse.

Where's an America-loving person to turn?

I Agree With Andrea Mitchell

Which means I may be losing my mind.

So I was watching the news the other night and saw the segment dealing with the British prime minister, Gordon Brown, getting himself in all kinds of trouble - apparently - for having muttered to an aide that an elderly constituent that he'd just talked to was bigoted.  A mutter that - according to the press, ahem - has enraged a nation.

Having listened closely to the exchange, I turned to Paula and said, "Well she is a bigot."

What was the big deal?

Looks like I'm not alone:
NBC's Andrea Mitchell Sides With U.K. Prime Minister, Slams Voter as a Bigot
By Scott Whitlock, NewsBusters

On Thursday's Morning Joe, NBC reporter Andrea Mitchell appeared and seemed to agree with Britain's Prime Minister that a voter he met was a bigot. Discussing Gordon Brown's April 28 comments, which were caught on a live mic, Mitchell defended, "And what he said is not actually that offensive...I mean, it was an honest opinion."

Even the fellow panel members on the mostly liberal MSNBC seemed shocked. Guest Sam Stein of the left-wing Huffington Post recoiled, "Really? To call her bigoted?"

Mitchell repeated her charge: "Well, she was decrying immigration and in a lot of people's views, that is a bigoted stand." [link]
Look, I've been called a bigot many times, so I know something of the meaning of the word.  And for a person to be opposed to immigrants, per se, does make one bigoted (as opposed to being against illegal immigration, which is a perfectly justifiable position).

I didn't understand what the uproar was about.  I still don't.  Others, it appears, feel the same way.

But Andrea Mitchell?

When society ignores the mentally deranged amongst us:
Man stabs 28 children at kindergarten in China
By Christopher Bodeen, Associated Press Writer

Taixing, China (AP) — The screams of the 4-year-olds inside the kindergarten could be heard out in the street. When people ran in to investigate, they found what one witness said was a scene "too horrible to imagine" — blood everywhere as a knife-wielding man slashed 28 children, two teachers and a security guard Thursday in the second such school attack in China in two days.

Experts called it a copycat rampage triggered by similar incidents Wednesday and last month. They said the wave of school attacks falls amid poor care for the mentally unstable and growing feelings of social injustice in the fast-changing country. [link]
My God.  Even the Chinese are powerless to stop these monsters.
