All the supporters of gov't booze are terrified that the money will be gone. All I hear is that we need to replace that income. Money over principle....again.
I'm as conservative as they come. and I have no desire for the government to act like a business. I'm not even sure how one could. I just want government to do well that which it has been ordained to do.
Conservatives want to control people's vices and access to behavior they deem "immoral".
Conservatives also don't mind finding alternative revenue streams to fund government services. it's broad taxes they hate, not fees for services or sin taxes.
And this will be a fun story to watch as the split isn't the conservative/liberal split. This is one of those tea party/libertarian/conservative splits.
Its not about finding new revenue streams, its about making the size of government smaller, and therefore less expesive. Government is not the answer to everything... ...Al...
So let me get this right, you would rather pay more in taxes like the income, sales, property, and capital gains, than have government operating liquor stores at a healthy profit which therefore allows taxes to be better balanced.
That's your point. You want less fees, less revenue streams for personal choice items like liquor and lottery tickets, so that you can have higher taxes?
Because remember, Virgina HAS a balanced budget requirement in its constitution, and although there is no question government in Virginia can be cut, we are all kidding ourselves if we think lost revenue in an already shrinking revenue position won't be made up somewhere, somehow.
My guess, knowing Virginia, is that the state would, in the event of a loss of revenue, pass the responsibility for the services down to local governments thus putting more pressure on your personal and real property tax rates.

With all the booze getting into the hands of underage kids, I think they should close the liquor store loophole.

Al,
I lol'd.
Idaho just decided to also keep the liquor monopoly in state hands.
folks want government to act more like a business and when it does, the conservative folks get dinged.
this is the classic fault line between conservatives and libertarians.
