Ah, West Virginia

I've written before about how strange West Virginia politics are these days.  Extremely conservative, ever more Republican on national issues and in national elections, but Democrat to the core locally, it is the kind of place that a political scientist could set up shop and spend the rest of his life trying to explain.

So how conservative is West Virginia in 2012?  Conservative enough to pull this off in its Democratic Party primary yesterday:

"Just how unpopular is President Obama in some parts of the country? Enough that a man in prison in Texas is getting four out of 10 votes in West Virginia's Democratic presidential primary."

There will be all kinds of excuses tossed about in upcoming days for this embarrassing turn of events.  But the basic truth is this: Barack Obama is the most disfavored President - in the eyes of most West Virginians - ever.

And, as the good people there will tell you, he's earned it.
