What Do You Expect From a New Yorker?

Remember the other day when I made mention of Virginia's 9th District Congressional challenger Anthony Flaccavento's Facebook page and how, if its any indication, he isn't drawing much of a following?  (For those who didn't see it, the Democrat from New York had, as of that writing, exactly one "friend.")

Well, here's the other half of that story that I should mention.  Anthony hasn't a clue who he's dealing with down here in Southwest Virginia.  The tip-off?

This is a screenshot from that same Facebook page (click on it to enlarge it) captured one day last week:

"Anthony Flaccavento talks to voters at the Dickenson County fair in Hayci - Dickenson County Fair."

As anyone this side of New York City knows, there is no such place as Hayci - in Dickenson County or anywhere else in Virginia.  And if the candidate from New York City had spent any time traveling the byroads of Southwest Virginia before he decided he could represent us in Congress, he'd have known that.

I hope, as he was wandering the Dickenson County Fair in Haysi that day, he wasn't pronouncing the name the way a New Yorker might - HAY'see, as in hayseed.  It's haySYE' as in the backbone of Southwest Virginia.

Funny?  Or pathetic?  You get to decide in November.

A parting note: You may recall that Democrats in the 9th District criticized now-Congressman Morgan Griffith - Flaccavento's opponent - for being an outsider in 2010 when he was running against their man, the hapless Rick Boucher, because Griffith lived a few yards outside the boundaries of the district.  So what do those Democrats have to say now that their party has nominated some New Age "farmer" from New York City to run against Griffith?

Silence ....

* I should mention the fact that the spelling on the Facebook page has since been corrected.  Someone from Southwest Virginia must have schooled the candidate from New York.

Stop What?

Being a freaking moron?

Joe Biden to stop at Virginia Tech

If his plan is to stop being an embarrassment to the United States at Virginia Tech, I'm all for it.

For Those Who Think Joe Biden Is a Swell Veep

On Tuesday, he is scheduled to hold a 4:15 p.m. event at Spiller Elementary School in Wytheville.

Romney Picks Boring White Guy

Okay, I know I'm way too cynical about all this.  But considering the fact that the position of Vice President of the United States is about as important to our way of life as mammaries on a boar are*, I simply felt that Mitt Romney had an opportunity to rub a little bit of dirt in the eyes of the Democratic Party and the media by nominating some token black or Hispanic person.  Who's racist?  Not me, fellas.  I picked a right-hand man/woman "of color!"   Or whatever.

Instead, Romney picked a competent, qualified - and unlike Joe Biden - sane Vice Presidential running mate:
Romney and Ryan head out to 'save American dream'
By Michael Mathes, AFP

Mitt Romney and newly minted running mate Paul Ryan will try to energize supporters in North Carolina Sunday after they hit the road on a bus tour across must-win US states, selling themselves as the duo who can "save the American dream."

Fresh from a surprise early morning rollout of Romney's vice presidential pick in Norfolk, Virginia, the Republican pair struck out across the state pushing a policy of fiscal responsibility and savaging President Barack Obama as a job-killer bent on changing the country for the worse.

Romney's pick, cast as a bold move by his party, is sure to transform the presidential race less than three months before November's election, and the two men electrified crowds as they took to the stump.

The campaign also aims to sharply shift debate away from Romney's business record, taxes and image as an out-of-touch multi-millionaire investor and toward larger wholesale issues such as how to revitalize the nation's sputtering economy.

"We can turn this thing around," Ryan, 42, told cheering supporters in Norfolk. [link]
Here's Ryan giving his acceptance speech:

Not a bad speech. Better, in fact, than the stuff Romney offers up. And articulate, which sets him apart from the idiot that Obama has running with him.

For what it's worth, the Tea Parties are jubilant about Romney's pick (you should see all the ecstatic emails in my inbox). And I understand why. Ryan is one of us.

So we are where we are. Once more unto the breach, my friends!

* The person of Vice President provides for only one important role - being there when the heart of the head dude stops.  Otherwise he occasionally shows up and  runs the Senate and more often, if he's Joe Biden, goes around the country making a fool of himself.

Wait Just a Minute!

Northern Virginia is supposed to be Obama country!

Well, maybe not:

Huge crowds line Manassas streets for Romney-Ryan

Hope springs eternal.

On The Ryan Nomination

The Virginia Shooting Sports Association has this:

"Mitt Romney has chosen Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate. Ryan brings a strong budgetary background to the ticket but also brings a strong record of support for the Second Amendment. Sportsmen and hunters will also relate to Ryan's love of hunting and fishing, something that is very popular in his native Wisconsin. Ryan regularly posts photos from his hunting trips on his Facebook page. Now is the time to go 'All In' and work hard to Defend Freedom and Defeat Obama."

We're with you, brutha.

Why Ryan

Okay, I can buy this:
The Ryan Choice: Romney selects a leader of the GOP's reform wing.
Wall Street Journal editorial

Vice Presidential choices rarely sway electoral outcomes, but they do reveal something about the men who make the choices. As Mr. Romney's first Presidential-level decision, the selection speaks well of his governing potential. He broke free of the stereotype that he is a cautious technocrat by picking Mr. Ryan, a man who has offered reforms that the country needs but are feared by the GOP's consultant class and much of his own party.

Mr. Romney is signaling that he realizes he needs a mandate if he is elected, which means putting his reform ideas before the American people for a clear endorsement. He is treating the public like grown-ups, in contrast to President Obama's focus on divisive and personal character attacks.

The Ryan choice also suggests that Mr. Romney understands that to defeat Mr. Obama he'll have to do more than highlight the President's economic failures. He must also show Americans that he has a tangible, specific reform agenda that will produce faster growth and rising incomes.

Mr. Ryan is well equipped to help him promote such an agenda. [link]
Let's hope Ryan has the chance to "promote such an agenda" and not get bogged down in Democrat/media distractions like who Romney killed many years ago or which drug kingpins fronted his campaign.

Our future depends on Romney and Ryan fixing this strife-torn country.

And For The Democrats' Reaction ...

... we turn to their super-intelligent spokesperson - Debbie Wasserman Schultz:

"Mitt Romney named Congressman Paul Ryan as his pick for Vice President.  Congressman Ryan has been called a serious person, but he, like Mitt Romney[,] has seriously flawed ideas for our economy that have only failed us in the past."

As opposed to Obama's ideas, which have made the economy the powerhouse that it is.

Thanks, Deb, for that pithy analysis.

Where Was This Guy In 2008?

Some deep thinker for The New Yorker has come up with the first - but, heaven knows, not the last - criticism of Mitt Romney's pick for Vice President:

For one thing, Ryan has no significant private-sector experience.

File that in the RIPE folder.

Any bets on whether the author, Ryan Lizza, considered Barack Obama's total lack of private-sector experience to be a disqualifier in 2008?

Sure.  You just know he did.

Remember The Veterans!

This will tug on your heartstrings. "The Story of Stars and Stripes Honor Flight":

They're slipping away from us. Those to whom this country owes such a massive debt of gratitude.

Here's to every one of them, the veterans who were prepared to give their all so that this country could be free.

Lest We Forget

The GOP has come out with a powerful ad attacking the character - or lack thereof - of our President:

"Doesn't America deserve better than a President who will say or do anything to stay in power?"

Yes. We do.

Biden: We Need Cattle Guard Retraining

I don't know how accurate a story this, that I received via email, is but here it is:
Joe asks for 6 months of retraining for 'Cattle Guards! '

For those of you who have never traveled to the west, or southwest, cattle guards are horizontal steel rails placed at fence openings, in dug-out places, in the roads adjacent to highways (sometimes across highways), to prevent cattle from crossing over that area. For some reason the cattle will not step on the "guards," probably because they fear getting their feet caught between the rails.

The Colorado ranchers had protested his proposed changes in grazing policies, so he ordered the Secretary of the Interior to fire half of the "cattle" guards immediately!

Before the Secretary of the Interior could respond and presumably try to straighten President Obama out on the matter, Vice-President Joe Biden intervened with a request that... before any "cattle" guards were fired, they be given six months of retraining .'Times are hard,' said Joe Biden, 'it's only fair to the cattle guards and their families be given six months of retraining! '
It's worth remembering that our President never set foot on land here in the continental United States until he went to college. That, coupled with the fact that he went right into academe and then to "community organizer" life in Chicago and then to politics, it's quite conceivable that the guy wouldn't know the difference between a cattle guard and a border guard. Just as he doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

So there's just enough reality in this spoof to make it work.

Here's to the author.

P.S.  You don't have to go out "west or southwest" to see a cattle guard.  You can come see one here in Bland, Virginia.  I and my neighbor share one.

'Fast & Furious' Still Raising Its Ugly Head

Eric Holder's not-so-clandestine effort to foist more gun control on the American people by running guns to Mexican murderers and drug lords is still playing out:
Report: Drug cartel used Fast and Furious weapon in failed assassination plot
By Matthew Boyle, The Daily Caller

Drug cartel operatives used weapons from Operation Fast and Furious in a failed attempt to assassinate a high-ranking Mexican law enforcement official, the El Paso Times reports in an article that follows up on an initial report from Breitbart News’ Mary Chastain.

The gun — which “was seized in Tijuana in connection with a drug cartel’s conspiracy to kill the police chief of Tijuana, Baja California, who later became the Juárez police chief” — is tied to Fast and Furious.

“The firearm was found Feb. 25, 2010, during an arrest of a criminal cell associated with Teodoro ‘El Teo’ García Simental and Raydel ‘El Muletas’ López Uriarte, allies of the Sinaloa cartel,” Diana Washington Valdez wrote on Monday for the El Paso Times. “Tijuana police said they arrested four suspects in March 2010 in connection with a failed attempt to take out Julián Leyzaola, and that the suspects allegedly confessed to conspiring to assassinate the police chief on orders from Tijuana cartel leaders.”

“Leyzaola, a retired Mexican army officer, reportedly survived several attempts on his life while trying to bring order to Tijuana, a city torn apart by turf battles following the arrests and deaths of Arellano Felix cartel leaders,” Valdez added.

This new information comes on the heels of the release of a lengthy congressional report into Fast and Furious from House oversight committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa and Sen. Chuck Grassley. That report — the first of three — named five Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives officials Grassley and Issa believe are ultimately responsible for Fast and Furious. On the same day of the report’s public release, one of those officials — former deputy ATF director William Hoover — resigned his position.

That congressional report also saw the release of new evidence that Obama administration ATF officials sought to cover up the Fast and Furious connection to a death other than that of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry. [link]
What in God's name was the chief law enforcement officer in America thinking?

That's The American Spirit!
