Out of the Past

Here's a photo of German-Americans in their logging camp carved out of the forest in northern Wisconsin, around 1918. The man standing to the right of the car is my grandmother's (Ida Magewske Fuhrman) brother, Richard, who ran the camp, and the woman to the left is his wife, Martha Passehl Magewske.

Harsh was their way of life.

*** Note the traditional German headware, including two men in the back seat of the car who appear to be wearing Alpine-style hats.
